In 2000 Steve and Karen had a growing sense that God was leading them to work with Native American people. During the summer of 2003 the Luten’s  participated in the Pilgrimage for Reconciliation, a month long trip that followed the Cherokee Trail of Tears from Cherokee North Carolina to Anadarko Oklahoma.  This experience solidified their conviction in the importance of Native leadership and the need for non-natives to be under  local indigenous leadership.  In 2003, they  moved to Yakima, WA., and soon afterwards began volunteering with the 4-1 Youth Church.  In 2005 Steve and Karen were invited to join Corey and Gina Greaves as they founded Mending Wings Ministries.  From 2005 through the 2007 Steve served as Mending Wings Executive Director and the Internship Director.  In 2006 Steve and Karen started the Young Adult Fellowship, a ministry focused on Native youths transition form high school to college and career.  They currently serve as the Young Adult Fellowship Directors.  Steve is a graduate of the University of Washington (1994) with a BA in English Literature.  He is also working on his Master in Business through WSU.

Martina Stahi Hello, My name is Martina R. Stahi.

Martina R. Stahi was born November 10, 1985. She is an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and grew up on the Yakama Reservation. She currently resides in the town of Toppenish, Washington with her family.

From her earliest days to her teenage years Martina’s grandmother took on the role as her nurturer. She raised her and supported her while Martina was attending school in Wapato, Washington. It was there that she was able to graduate with the class of 2004 though her grandmother was unable to attend because she had gone to meet with our creator. In the years that followed, Martina moved in with her father who continuously encouraged her to further her education by attending college classes. Martina did not do so until the fall of 2007. She studied a few courses on the small, but beautiful, campus of Heritage University located on the reservation. Unfortunately, Martina put her education on hold. She will continue when time will allow it.

Grief and sorrow became known to her during her teenage years. She witnessed, not only the loss of her grandmother, but her mother as well. She felt herself plunging into a constant state of depression until a friend of hers introduced Martina to her youth pastor- Corey Greaves. With a cell phone number that he provided she was able to reach him in times of loneliness, and he helped her through. Martina says, “He is the one leading me closer and closer to Jesus just by being there for me. I could only hope to do the same by helping him reach out to the teenagers of today. Letting them know that there is something good in store for them on and off earth.”

Jeremy Vargas

Jeremy Vargas was born in Yakima, Washington and raised in the Yakima valley all his life. He graduated from Wapato High School in 2008. He is currently on Volunteer Staff with Mending Wings. Jeremy was a student in several of Mending Wings programs since it’s conception in 2006. As a high school student he felt as though God was calling him to be a youth leader. In order to do this he became involved with many of the youth programs such as: Young Adult Fellowship (YAF), Rez bible Study (R.B.S.), Footprints of our Elders classes (drumming), Guys Night, and Community Healers. Jeremy says, “My involvement in these programs have allowed me to become not only closer to the Lord, but closer to the Native youth in our valley, and allowed me to lead some to Christ. I continue to grow daily in my walk and in turn help others become closer in their walk.”

Hilary Davis

Hilary K. Davis grew up in a small town north of Boston, where she loved to spend as much time by the ocean as possible. When deciding where to go to college, she thought the Northwest would be a welcoming place, so she made the journey (one of many) to Whitman College in Walla Walla. She majored in Conversations About Deep Things (i.e., Philosophy) and got to know the love of Jesus a lot in the Whitman Christian Fellowship. Upon graduating she felt called to follow Jesus to the Yakama Reservation, where she is happy to live and spend time with all the wonderful people of Mending Wings. Her favorite color is orange!
