Dancing Our Prayers Traditional, Euro-American mission practices among our people have not worked very well at all. Pastors and missionaries have told us that they were Christians and we were not, and that if we were to become Christians then we must look, think, and act like them. And so our cultures were replaced with someone else’s culture “for the sake of the Gospel.” Our identities were replaced, along with our family values, traditions, ceremonies, beliefs, spirituality and languages. As a result, I see so many of our youth and families who, conscientiously, or sub-conscientiously, are ashamed of being who Creator made them to be. Dancing Our Prayers is a way to break that shame and replace it with dignity—to take the idea that God doesn’t like us very much, and replace it with the truth that He wildly loves us just the way He made us—as Indian people! Dancing Our Prayers is also a way to correct misconceptions within the church about Native America, and to build bridges between Native and non-Native people—particularly within the context of the church. The Dancing Our Prayers youth teams travel locally, regionally, nationally, and inter-nationally sharing the Good News of Yeshua with all we come into contact with. And we share this Good News in our way—the only way we know how—as Indian people, and through our Indian ways. |
